Pinpoint Corrosion

What is it?

What Does Pinpoint Rusting Mean?

Pinpoint rusting refers to a type of corrosion that results in the formation of tiny, dispersed spots of rust across a metal surface. Pinpoint rusting typically occurs where pinholes or holidays are present in a coating.

Pinholes are formed due to an improper coating balance when the coating dries rapidly, or due to inaccurate spraying during the application of the coating.

Holidays are formed due to the inaccurate application of a coating, which results in some areas of the metal surface remaining uncoated. Such locations are usually located at or near tight angled corners and rivets

 PREVENTION:

•Ensure that an adequate thickness of a primer coat is applied to cover the surface profile.

•Use a thicker coating system.

•Protect coating from contamination with grinding dust etc.

•Stone chips or scratches should be repaired immediately.

•Ensure through cleaning of all metal surfaces with an appropriate metal cleaner. Remove all rust by sand blasting to produce  bright metal.

•Sandblasted areas should be coated immediately after blasting to avoid flash rusting.

•Seal and protect all cavities
